Congratulations! You just got new dentures in Arlington and they look great. Your new smile is being complimented, and you can eat and speak with confidence. Now if there were just something you could do about the gum discomfort and pain that is completely normal during the first few weeks that you wear dentures. The best thing to do is see your dentist, because that pain may be due to ill-fitting dentures. But in the meantime, here are some simple home remedies that can provide relief.
Topical Gel
There are a number of topical numbing gels and creams sold over-the-counter. One of these might provide relief until you can see the dentist.
Saltwater
Remember when your mom had you gargle with warm saltwater to relieve a sore throat and it worked? That’s because salt can help reduce inflammation. So, add .5 to 1 teaspoon of salt to a glass of warm water and stir to dissolve. Then, remove your dentures and swish the saltwater in your mouth for 15 to 30 seconds.
Aloe Vera Gel
This cool and soothing gel isn’t only for sunburns. Try smoothing aloe vera gel along the underside of your dentures one or two times a day to relieve gum irritation.
Massage Your Gums
What do you see a baby do when he or she is teething? They will try to put just about anything in their mouth in order to massage tender gum tissue. Wash your hands and then use your finger to apply firm but gentle pressure along your gums. This can help reduce any swelling and encourage blood circulation.
Pain Relievers
Ibuprofen, which goes by the brand names Advil or Motrin, can be taken to reduce the inflammation that causes denture pain. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the bottle or ask your dentist or physician.
Do Not Sleep with Dentures
Just as your body needs to rest and recover for the night, so do your gums. Therefore, never sleep with dentures in your mouth. Let dentures soak in water or a denture cleaning solution. While they soak and sanitize, your gums can relax and be bathed in healing saliva.
Denture Adhesive
Although dentures are held in place by muscle tension in your cheeks as well as suction, you may find that adding a denture adhesive to the underside is helpful. This can prevent loose and slipping dentures from irritating your gums.
The best way to avoid denture pain is to make sure they fit very well. So, see your dentist as soon as possible. An adjustment to the base or a denture liner may be needed.
